The hiring problem in HR
Recruiting HR people is unlike recruiting anyone else, because the candidate knows the process better than most interview panels. A vague brief, a slow response or an unstructured interview does not just cost you a candidate. It tells them exactly what your business is like to work in, and they read it accurately.
What the job covers has also shifted faster than most position descriptions have. Employment law has moved quickly in recent years, and psychosocial safety obligations have brought workplace mental health squarely inside the HR remit.
Businesses that needed an HR administrator three years ago now need someone who can read a regulation and change how managers behave, which is a materially different person.
The first HR hire is its own trap. Most businesses make it somewhere between 40 and 80 staff, and usually just after an incident that made the gap obvious. That timing pushes them toward someone who can handle the immediate problem, when what the business actually needs is someone who can build the function so the next one does not happen.
And in small teams the HR person has nobody to ask. A sole practitioner carries employee relations, recruitment, payroll interface, safety and culture with no peer to test a judgement against, which is a common reason good people leave those roles.
Where we help
A first HR appointment
Working out whether you need a coordinator, a generalist manager or a consultant on retainer, before you commit to a permanent salary.
A recruitment process that stands up to an HR audience
Structured, prompt and properly briefed, because in this market the process is the pitch.
Employee relations and safety capability
Specialists who can operate in complex matters rather than escalate them.
Talent acquisition hires
We recruit recruiters, and we know what separates someone who fills roles from someone who builds a function.
Support for a sole HR practitioner
HR Consulting on retainer alongside your internal person, so they have somewhere to test a judgement.

HR generalist
Coordinators, advisers, business partners, managers and Heads of HR.

When to talk to us
- You are making your first HR hire and are not certain what the role should be
- Your sole HR person is carrying more than the role was designed for
- You need employee relations capability rather than employee relations advice
- You are building or rebuilding an internal talent acquisition function
- You want a people leader who can sit in strategic conversations, not only operational ones
More than recruitment
This is the one sector where we can often solve the problem without a placement. If the workload is real but the volume does not justify a permanent salary, HR Consulting on a retainer gives you the capability now, and we can revisit the hire when the business is ready for it.
